NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio: Fracking science and technology not reliable, Fracking is too much danger to New York water supply and environment in general

Upstate fracking is danger to city water supplies: mayor by Geoff Earle, January 24, 2014, NY Post
Mayor de Blasio is jumping forcefully into the debate over fracking on upstate lands — calling it a danger to the city’s water supply. Asked Thursday for his view of the drilling practice, also known as hydraulic fracturing, de Blasio first noted that “my purview is the five boroughs” before sounding off on the hot-button environmental issue. “The one thing I am firm about is that I don’t see any place for fracking,” he told reporters. “The science simply isn’t reliable enough. The technology isn’t reliable enough. And, there’s too much danger to our water supply, to our environment in general.”

De Blasio said there should be a statewide moratorium on fracking “until the day comes that we can actually prove it’s safe and I don’t think that day is coming any time soon.” [Emphasis added]

De Blasio: Fracking Poses ‘Too Much Danger To Water Supply’ In New York by HuffingtonPost.com, January 24, 2014
Speaking to reporters in Washington, D.C. Thursday, Mayor Bill de Blasio voiced his “firm” opposition to hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as fracking, in New York state. “I don’t see any place for fracking,” de Blasio said following a speech at the U.S. Conference of Mayors. “The science simply isn’t reliable enough. The technology isn’t reliable enough. And, there’s too much danger to our water supply, to our environment in general.”

The mayor’s comments come during a statewide moratorium on the controversial practice placed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has delayed on making a decision to finalize new fracking regulations for the state. De Blasio said Cuomo’s ban should be upheld until “we can actually prove it’s safe and I don’t think that day is coming any time soon.” … De Blasio’s predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, strongly supported fracking methods. “I don’t foresee a day when there will be technology that will allow safe exploitation (of shale gas),” Ouellet said in Quebec City.

“Our position is very clear: we want a complete moratorium, not only on exploitation but also on exploration of shale gas. We haven’t changed our minds.” [Emphasis added]
