Excellent comment to the CBC article below:

Doogie Russ:

Funny how the first thing out of their mouths was “it wasn’t us”.

Comment by a rural Albertan:

well this is a big upgrade … bunch of f*ucking liars

Initially recorded as a 4.1-magnitude earthquake, Natural Resources Canada upgraded it to a 5.0-magnitude quake, making it the second largest in Alberta since reporting began.

An investigation determined the tremors recorded near Rocky Mountain House were not induced by fracking or any other oil and gas activity, an AER spokesperson told CBC News.

“The earthquake occurred at approximately nine kilometres below the surface, which indicates that it occurred naturally,” AER said in a statement Thursday.

Earthquake near Rocky Mountain House upgraded to Magnitude 5.0 by Josh Hall, Oct 22, 2021, rdnewsNOW

An earthquake which occurred at 9:23 p.m. on Oct. 20 has been upgraded from Magnitude 4.1 to 5.0.

Andrew Schaeffer, research scientist with Geological Survey of Canada, tells rdnewsNOW the quake has been confirmed by the Alberta Energy Regulator to have been naturally occurring, as opposed to induced.

He also notes the depth of nine kilometres (previously thought to be 10 km) is a good indicator of that, with induced earthquakes typically much more shallow.

“This earthquake was the largest in the Rocky Mountain House area since our catalogue came about in 1985,” Schaeffer shares.

“This region isn’t an area that’s under active tectonic deformation, such as in southwest B.C., but the Rocky Mountains, while old, are relatively young, and the process of building them has created all sorts of faults. As a result, these little earthquakes go off not infrequently.”

In the last 20 years, there have been about 10 earthquakes in the region above 4.0, but below 5.0. Schaeffer says those measuring in the magnitude 2-3 range number in the hundreds.

Originally pegged at 37 km NNW of Rocky Mountain House, Earthquakes Canada now lists the rumbler at 31 km WNW of the municipality.

There have still been no reports of damage, though reports of feeling the earthquake have been reported from places as far away as Hinton, Vegreville and Claresholm.

Updated: 4.1 magnitude earthquake recorded northwest of Rocky Mountain House, 9:23 p.m. quake felt as far as Edmonton and Calgary by Lacombe Express, Oct 21, 2021

An earthquake near Rocky Mountain House on Wednesday night could be felt as far away as Edmonton.

The 4.1 magnitude earthquake was detected at 9:23 p.m. 37 km northwest of Rocky Mountain House.

There have been no reports of damage from the quake.

Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and its Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) branch said it was aware of the earthquake and it is not oil industry-related.

“The earthquake occurred at approximately 9 km below the surface, which indicates that it occurred naturally,” said the AER in an email. Not necessarily. Companies and their harm-enabling regulators like AER are still learning about the “brute force and ignorant” frac experiments. Frac’ing/industrial injection is causing more frequent, bigger, more destructive and deadly quakes which may also be deeper. AER is too quick to defend industry; engages in fraud to enable crimes by companies, notably Encana/Ovintiv; has a history of breaking the law, hiring PIs to spy on innocent Albertans and lying to the courts, the harmed and media; publicly lies about court rulings; has no credibility; and is untrustworthy. NRC scrubs frac-caused quakes from their website; AER/AGS and other authorities, including the Geological Survey of Canada, lie to enable industry’s damaging fracs. None are trustworthy when it comes to oil and gas and frac’ing/injection.

“In Alberta, earthquakes that are induced by energy development typically occur between four and five km below the surface.” And where atypically?

Earthquakes Canada had received more than 400 reports on the earthquake by Thursday morning. Of those, 369 reported the effects as weak and another 35 described it as light, why did all media ignore the strong and severe felt reports? using Earthquakes Canada 10-level scale, which ranges from not felt at all (1) to extreme with heavy damage (10).

More than 1,000 people shared their experiences with Wednesday’s quake on volcanodiscovery.com. Copied below for archiving.

A Red Deer resident wrote, ” I was laying on my bed, and it felt like the building was hit by a car or something. my bed shook as if I had jumped on it”

“Sitting in chair in living room of mobile home. Felt floor shake for a few seconds. felt like I was falling backwards in the chai,” wrote someone, who identified themselves as being near Rocky Mountain House and who was located 36 km southeast of the epicentre.

Another Rocky resident 42 km south of the epicentre wrote, “Inside the house. Heard a rumble and then felt bed move slightly and shake for a couple of seconds. Heard noises of things in house moving.”

A Red Deer resident about 90 km southeast of the epicentre reported, “It felt as though something hit the roof, and as if the wall behind the bookcase moved. It freaked me out and I said, ‘What was that?’”

Another Rocky resident, 45 km south of the epicentre, said “Was sleeping but thought someone broke in the back door. My dog barked and took off. My partner said it felt like a truck hit the house.”

A Red Deer County resident living about five km east of Spruce View and 86 km from the epicentre wrote, “I ran outside thinking someone had run into our house with a heavy vehicle. My neighbour a 1/4 mile away didn’t feel anything.”

Some from as far away as Edmonton, Three Hills, Trochu reported mild shaking.

Why leave out the reports about frac’ing near the quake?

On March 4, 2019 a 4.18 magnitude earthquake near Sylvan Lake rattled some windows in central Alberta.

The AGS undertook an investigation shortly after the quake, whose epicentre was about 12 kilometres south of Sylvan Lake.

Fracking caused March 2019 earthquake near Sylvan Lake

Fracking was later confirmed as the cause of the earthquake that rattled homes from Sylvan Lake to Red Deer last March, say government scientists. the investigation also determined that a 3.13 magnitude quake near Red Deer in March 2018 was “induced,” as was a cluster of seismic events under 2.0 on the Richter scale.

Calgary-based Vesta Energy was fracking in the Sylvan Lake area when the 4.18 magnitude quake was triggered.

In May 2020, Vesta was given the green light to resume fracking at sites considered low risk for seismic activity after the Alberta Energy Regulator signed off on a risk assessment plan.

The incident led to new seismic monitoring and requirements for all companies fracking in the Red Deer region.

Earthquake that shook western Alberta was 2nd-largest ever in province, No damage was reported Wednesday night after 5.0-magnitude quake by CBC News, Oct 20, 2021, Updated: October 21

A 5.0 magnitude earthquake was reported just before 9:30 p.m. MT about 37 kilometres north-northwest of Rocky Mountain House, Alta. (CBC)

Why do main media not include visuals of fracs and oil and gas wells in quake areas? An earthquake that shook west-central Alberta Wednesday night was not caused by industrial activity, the Alberta Energy Regulator says.

“In Alberta, earthquakes that are induced by energy development typically occur between four and five kilometres below the surface.”

Magnitude 5.0 earthquake shakes Rocky Mountain House

According to Natural Resources Canada, the earthquake was detected at 9:23 p.m. MT, about 37 kilometres north-northwest of Rocky Mountain House, a town 215 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.

The department said the earthquake was lightly felt and there was no reported damage as of 10 p.m.

The magnitude of the quake was a preliminary report that may change as more data comes in. https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/ZvakO/3/

The tremor is visible on the wave from seismograph from the Edmonton station and the agency’s community internet intensity map shows multiple reports from the Edmonton region as well as some in the Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer areas.

Earthquakes are unusual in the area but not unheard of, said Jeff Gu, a seismological researcher with the University of Alberta.

“It is fairly sizable in this area, even though there have been many earthquakes occurring along the Rocky Mountain foothills,” Gu said in an interview Thursday. “It’s on the larger size.”

A complex history

Gu said the region has a complex history for seismic activity and said the latest quake should prompt further study in the area.

“I think that this is worth investigating in the next weeks or months and potentially even having more instruments down in that area to have better data,” Gu said in an interview with CBC Radio’s Edmonton AM.

“In fact, this area is very complicated. It’s got a history of a variety of different earthquakes.

“It’s got natural earthquakes occurring near the Rocky Mountains, and they’re usually at slightly deeper depths, 10 kilometres or so.

“And then there have been earthquakes linked to gas extraction, as early as the 1980s.”

Jeff Gu, seismological researcher with the University of Alberta, says the area has a complex history of earthquakes triggered by natural and industrial causes. (CBC News)

Natural Resources data detailing the largest earthquakes in the region shows the area has been shaken before.

The most powerful earthquakes in the region were recorded in the past decade. One in 2015 and two others in 2019 were all measured at 4.6 in magnitude.

The timing of earthquakes can provide critical clues to the cause, Gu said.

While earthquakes triggered by fracking are “almost instantaneous” it can take years for industrial activities that inject waste-water into the ground to trigger any tremors, he said.

“Those can take a lag of months to years until an earthquake can happen, until the build-up in the stress can really break the camel’s back.”

Moderate earthquakes rare in Alberta

Gu said moderate quakes always cause a stir in the scientific community.

“It sounds wrong to say that we’re excited about earthquakes, but as long as it’s an earthquake that does not cause damage, yeah, we’re very happy because they can tell us so much about the underground conditions, the stress and the causes of these events.”

While Alberta has been historically seismically quiet, activity has been steadily increasing since the late 1970s.

Seismic events in Alberta tend to be between micro (zero magnitude) and minor (three magnitude) in size. Moderate earthquakes with a magnitude greater than four are more rare, the AER says on its website.

The biggest earthquake ever recorded in Alberta was measured at 5.4 magnitude on April 14, 2001, 40 kilometres northeast of Dawson Creek, B.C., near the B.C.-Alberta border.

The largest earthquake in Alberta triggered by industrial activity was measured at 4.8 magnitude, on January 12, 2016, 35 kilometres west of Fox Creek.

A few of the comments:

Buke Lactavose:

They are fracking like crazy out there because the wells don’t produce as expected

Granciono Rodriguez:

Just checked the fracking map, been a lot of fracking between Red Deer and Edmonton. Your likely suspect.

T.Rosco Duncan:

Oh ya – the AER knows. it knows incompetence only.

Roland Durandal:

Reply to @T.Rosco Duncan: Yes they clear the industry within 24 hours of the quake whereas the scientist says:

While earthquakes triggered by fracking are “almost instantaneous” it can take years for industrial activities that inject waste-water into the ground to trigger any tremors, he said.

“Those can take a lag of months to years until an earthquake can happen, until the build-up in the stress can really break the camel’s back.”

I know who I trust and believe.

Loran Graham:

Its impossible for the AER to know what triggered the quake within 24 hours. Making a statement only makes them look like fools

Al Millar:

A lot of unanswered questions for such a rare occurrence but even with no equipment available the Alberta Energy Regulator rules out industrial activity such as Fracking . We believe or do We ?

Ken G. Swanson:

Is there fracking going on in the area of the quake? That’s the first thing AER ought to have reported on instead of saying industry didn’t do it.

Bernard Cloutier:

Reply to @Ken G. Swanson: Yep, only 8 kilometers away.

2021: Peace Region NEBC Canada, New Study: Cumulative frac development and earthquakes: Warning by Allan Chapman: Bigger frac quakes coming, may kill and destroy; Pathetic 100% industry funded and controlled OGC enabling the horrific frac harms like AER, as usual.

2021 06 10: Rystad Energy on Oil & Gas Industry’s Dark Monster: Waste water increasing number of felt earthquakes & sinister deregulation allowing industry’s toxic waste to be dumped for “beneficial” use. Fancy some cancer with your celery?

A worrying Rystad Energy analysis of seismic activity in the US’ key oil producing regions reveals that the number of noticeable earthquakes has been increasing year after year since 2017. Tremors of above the magnitude of 2 on the Richter scale quadrupled in 2020 and are on track to increase even further in frequency in 2021 if oil and gas activity sticks to its current drilling methods at the same pace.

Rystad Energy’s research, which examined data from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico, showed that earthquakes of above the given magnitude accumulated to a count of 242 in 2017, growing to 491 in 2018, 686 in 2019 and 938 in 2020. Around 570 such tremors have been recorded through the first five months of 2021, meaning we may see a new record this year if the trend continues.

The trend appears to be moving not only to more frequent, but also larger events.

So far this year, there have already been 11 individual seismic events of magnitude 3.5 or greater, which can certainly be felt but may not cause any damage, a worrying sign compared to just six such events annually in 2018 and 2019, and 14 events in 2020.

Water disp.jpg

… To offset the yearly growth of disposed water that Rystad Energy is forecasting due to the coming boom in the US shale industry, the volumes of treated water must increase from the 1.5 billion barrels seen in 2020 to 1.7 billion barrels in 2021 and 2022, 1.8 billion barrels in 2023 and then rise even further from 2024 onwards as the needs to dispose water will again exceed 12 billion barrels due to increased activity.

“Earthquakes are not the only environmental issue caused by water disposal. Fresh water sourcing in arid regions of West Texas and New Mexico threaten the water supply of local communities and essential agriculture activities, while environmental concerns surrounding the chemical composition of produced water serve only to fan the flames of public antipathy,” adds Hassler.

While ESG initiatives are positive, the real driver to increase water recycling adoption is cost. Midstream companies continue to build out pipeline infrastructure to allow operators cheaper access to produced water, while also expanding existing recycling facilities or building new ones.

Rystad Energy estimates that by the end of 2022, the Permian Basin – including both the Delaware and Midland sub-basins – could be able to meet between 40% and 43% of frac water demand from recycled produced water. The escape hatch word is “could” – industry could, but won’t because companies are too cheap, greedy, and don’t give a shit about the environment or the people living and working in frac fields. The only way they might do it, is if the public is forced to pay for it all and gives more billions in freebies/subsidies. To meet this target, additional investment from the midstream space will be required to drive costs down further.

There are many ideas in relation to produced water that may help alleviate the growing pains of the recycling infrastructure and the disposal seismic problem. Recently, a legislation change in Texas allowed the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to take responsibility for the permitting of produced water surface discharge to poison us, our food, livestock, wildlife, fish, creeks, rivers, etc for beneficial reuse.

In theory, the change in regulatory bodies (the TCEQ took over from the Environmental Protection Agency) should allow for a more streamlined translation = deregulated permitting process, enabling operators to discharge produced water volumes into surface water to be beneficially reused for agriculture or wildlife. However, this does not appear to be the case, as the TCEQ has yet to administer a single permit since taking over responsibilities. …

2019: Earthquake felt Sunday morning (March 10) near Rocky Mountain House, Alta., Excellent well-researched comments by Diana Daunheimer, Alberta farmer and mother of two

… Increased seismic activity in RMH has been attirbuted to natural gas activites:

“The increase in seismicity south west of Rocky Mountain House, starting in the mid-70s, prompted studies centered on data collected over a 23 day field campaign, operated by the Geological Survey of Canada and the University of Alberta. The Rocky Mountain House cluster studies documented the first evidence of induced seismicity related to hydrocarbon production in Alberta.”

Brazeau cluster, it’s injection:

“In a case of induced seismicity near a disposal well, an AGS study of the Brazeau River Cluster found that “it is likely that the Brazeau River Cluster events were induced by injection activities.” Specifically, it was found that seismicity started 3 years after the first injection “We find that the first statistically significant increase in seismicity lags the onset of wastewater injection (October 1991) by ~3.33 years.”

… From Robert Wetmiller Abstract

“Earthquakes near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, and their relationship to gas production facilities”

“A 1980 field survey of earthquake activity near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta, using one digital and six conventional seismographs, recorded 146 microearthquakes (M ≤ 3.4) in 23 days and located 67 of them. The located events, and probably the unlocated events as well, all occurred in a small zone approximately 4 km north–south by 4 km east–west by 1 km thick, centred near 52°12.5′N, 115°15′W at a depth of 4.0 km, with an uncertainty of ±2 km on each of the location coordinates. The activity occurred below and (or) in the Strachan D-3A sour gas reservoir, which is a Devonian-aged limestone reef complex in a section of nearly flat-lying, unfaulted sediments. The earthquakes had a composite thrust-faulting mechanism with generally north-trending, intermediate-dipping planes in the presence of a regional deviatoric stress field that was horizontally compressive and oriented approximately east–west. The earthquake activity may be related to the extraction of the natural gas and related fluids from the reservoir, but the exact relationship cannot be documented at this time. The earthquake activity in the region increased dramatically after the production of gas from the reservoir began in the early 1970’s.”

High level of oil and gas activity, both conventional and unconventional are also realties of this area.
