Cenovus Energy Inc. will be leasing the historic Calgary Chamber of Commerce building and using it primarily for training its staff, the Herald has learned. The energy giant, which is currently in the process of moving its staff into the new Bow office skyscraper, intends to have its staff working out of the Chamber building as well by the second half of 2013, confirmed Reg Curren, a company spokesperson. … Curren said Cenovus will occupy the entire four floors of the Chamber building“We’re excited to secure space close to the Bow,” he said. Curren said the move fits with the company’s stated strategy of having as many staff as possible close to the Bow. Company-wide Cenovus has about 4,900 people with about half of them working in Calgary. He said Cenovus employees are currently working in several downtown locations. As the company looks for opportunities to consolidate space near the Bow tower, it will also take 10 floors of office space in the nearby Rocky Mountain Plaza in the second half of 2013, primarily for IT staff. In mid-August, Cenovus began moving its employees into the 59-storey, $1.4 billion Bow building, which will have just under two million square feet of space at the corner of Centre Street and 5th and 6th Avenues S.E. The move of about 2,100 employees is expected to be completed by the end of the year. But the company has about 2,300 offices in the Bow to accommodate future growth. The company will occupy floors three to 28. The upper half of the Bow will be occupied by staff from Encana Corp., which has also begun its move into the building. It will be home to about 2,000 Encana employees.
