The trip to the Rio + 20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development cost taxpayers $37,975, but McQueen said Alberta had to be there to put forward its case. She said representatives of many countries were shocked by how much Alberta is doing on the environment, particularly its monitoring of cumulative effects, its carbon capture and storage projects and its tax on carbon dioxide emissions. “It was important for us to go there and tell the story ourselves,” McQueen said. “People walked away with a different perspective. “It’s part of the message we need to get out. It’s expensive….” [Emphasis added]
