Three reports released this week showing gas development impacts on humans, two reports in Canada and one in the United States, showing results of the nation’s largest health survey to date of Marcellus Shale residents near oil and gas development, fuel the fracking debate, including the aspect of human rights to health continually violated and people’s health claims dismissed. In Canada, anti-frackers say studies by biologist Louis LaPierre, and the chief medical health officer Dr. Eilish Clearysupport their position. In the United States, the same holds true for the multi-agency report. Earthworks, ShaleTest, and Louisiana Environmental Action Network Technical Advisor Wilma Subra released their report Thursday, Gas Patch Roulette, How Shale Gas Development Risks Public Health in Pennsylvania, detailing results of the nation’s largest health survey to date of Marcellus Shale residents living near oil and gas development. “The clear association between gas development and public health impacts revealed by this research demands that states stop ignoring the problem and start developing the standards necessary to protect the public,” said President of Subra Company and MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Wilma Subra.
